I wanted to let folks know that I’ll be having an author chat on Midnight Moon Café Friday, and there will be a chance to win a copy of Ancestral Magic. I’ll love to see some of you there.
Also, has anyone here been to zazzle? How's the quality of the shirts and such there? Thinking about having promo stuff made to wear to cons and readings since I can't find a local place to do it.
Okay, I have decided to begin the great Vegan experiment. My food intolerances have gotten worse to the point that I feel ill most of the time now. Our budget is still tight, so I have to decide how to manage the vegan cooking without a) killing the budget, b) throwing off my diet (I gained back some weight this winter and I want it gone), and c) eating stuff I don’t like. Now I admit the vegan fare at the fundraiser this weekend rocked, and made me think that may tastes had changed enough to maybe be able to handle this sort of experiment. I’m tired of being sick all the time. Dairy, eggs, meat, it seem my body is reacting as negative to these now as it does to tomatoes, which is very bad.
I’m hoping to try to add something each day new, see if that is easier on out budget. If folks have suggestions (kids friendly recipes and such) feel free to share. The cheese will be the hardest to give up since the vegan cheese I’ve had is unpleasant and the family loves pizza and mac n’ cheese…I may have to make some of the non cheese stuff for me since the lactose issues don’t seen to effect the kids just yet. I can share my experiences will ya’ll, but I will add it under the cut for those who don’t want to hear about my food experiments. :) If I really get into this I might make it a separate blog.
Okay I made my own tofu a loooooong time ago, so I figure I could use a refresher course in making it and cooking with it. I will have to be careful how much soy to have in my diet with my thyroid issues, but if I offset the soy with plenty of rice I should be okay. It makes me wish I’d gotten that soymilk maker to make getting from the beans to the milk a simpler process. Maybe just so I don’t have to wait a day to make some I’ll pick up soymilk this week at the same time I am pricing soy beans in bulk.
For now I’m hitting Aldies and getting bananas and break to make some vegan French toast for me and the kids. I had some this weekend that was amazing tasting. It involves 2 bananas, about 2/3 cups vanilla soy milk (I’m gonna try to substitute vanilla rice milk), cinnamon all mushed up in a blender and then fried on the griddle like usual. I might hit the used book store of half price books for some vegan cookbooks to see what other kids of stuff we can try.
Update on the Vegan French toast… the toast turned out soggier then I’d intended and it stuck to the pans, burning a bit in the process. It tasted decent, but perhaps I had the pans too hot, or something because it was messy. Maybe more soy milk next time…donno. Maybe I need a better griddle.

Good luck on the shift to veganism! I know several people who are happy vegans, it seems to be becoming much easier to do now as people share their experiences and recipes and tips.
