Here’s the report for Saturday.
No sleeping in it seems this morning even though I had a late night. I had an 8:30 panel I wanted to catch on “Where is the Goddess These Days”. Unfortunately much of the panel was taken up with slide presentations (I am not a visual learner) which is a bit much for my ADD brain so early in the morning after a late night. One of the presentations dealt with goddess and the “awe effect” of the divine in classic lit which was cool, but the other was goddess in art slides I’d seen in more women’s events then I could count. Old news for me. I liked hearing Alex Bledsoe talk about the goddess in his book, though I wish the panel itself had been less Goddess 101 and more Goddess in spec lit. I felt guilty mentioning Ancestral Magic as goddess spec fic as an audience member, but the panel didn’t seem to have any knowledge of other current goddess fic to suggest.
Next I popped into the “Open and Affirming Childrearing” panel and that was great. It felt good to know I wasn’t the only parent that felt like that were struggling against the world to support their sparkily sons or/and amazon daughters. I often wish there was more of a local community in Milwaukee for our kids, but at least they have places like Wiscon where they can really be themselves without fear of physical or emotional retribution. As many issues as we adults have interacting with each other, it always makes me hopefully to see the kids together without all the extra baggage we carry.
I had a great super sekrit meeting around lunch but I’ll just say the plot to take over the world is coming along fine :P
The rest of the afternoon is a bit of a blur. I’d meant to hit a couple more panels since I had the day off as a panelist, but the consuite was so short staffed all weekend I decided to stop by there for an hour or two to help out after lunch. In fact I don’t think I did anything beside just hang with folks and chases children (besides visit the dealers room to buy a few books) until about 45 minutes before the parties started. I normally don’t do the parties since its hard enough to get over my shyness to talk to folks during the day, but I really wanted to show my support for Verb Noire. My daughter insisted she wanted to go too so we went to the party early to help set up and I stayed a bit to take some heat off of the hostesses.
Besides policing diva lass and her candy intake, I think I survived being far more social then I’m used to in the evenings. My daughter is sooooo much better at this type of thing than I am. I did manage to pass her off on dad so I could dash off to the “Was if Good for You” panel which was very good. I’m glad I stayed up late for that one. What I wouldn’t give for a transcript of it though.
Another late night. I do regret not making it to the farmer’s market, but it was a good day anyways. I was a bit pouty that Room of Ones Own didn’t have copies of Ancestral Magic like I hoped they would, but luckily I thought to bring copies for the Broad Universe table.
